The Brigade of Gurkhas has been awarded the prestigious Freedom of the County of Kent, the highest civic honour bestowed by Kent County Council, in recognition of more than 216 years of loyal and distinguished service to the United Kingdom and its longstanding ties with communities across Kent.

The honour was formally granted on 17 September 2026, following a proposal by Kent County Council Leader Linden Kemkaran, who paid tribute to the exceptional courage, dedication and professionalism of generations of Gurkha soldiers. She also acknowledged the valuable contributions made by Gurkha veterans and their families to local communities throughout Kent.

The Brigade of Gurkhas has served alongside the British Army since 1815, earning worldwide respect for its bravery, loyalty and outstanding military service. Over the past two centuries, Gurkha soldiers have played significant roles in numerous military operations and conflicts, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the United Kingdom.

The award also recognises the strong and enduring relationship between the Gurkhas and the people of Kent, particularly in areas such as Folkestone, Ashford and other parts of the county, where many former Gurkha servicemen and their families have settled and continue to make valuable contributions to local society.

The Freedom of the County is a prestigious ceremonial honour recognising exceptional service and achievement. Although it carries no legal privileges or financial benefits, it represents the highest level of civic recognition and appreciation from Kent County Council.

A formal Freedom Parade is planned for 2027, with the date and further details to be announced in due course.

This historic recognition is a moment of immense pride for all serving Gurkha personnel, veterans, their families and the wider Nepalese community. It honours the remarkable legacy of generations of Gurkha soldiers, their sacrifices and their enduring commitment to the United Kingdom.

The award also symbolises the lasting friendship, mutual respect and strong bond between the Gurkha community and the people of Kent, reflecting a shared history and a continuing commitment to community integration, unity and social cohesion.
