Sagarmatha Gurkha/Nepalese Community Ashford Kent (SGNCAK) hands over £6K to East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

Members of the Nepalese Community in Ashford Kent managed to raise £6129.06 for the NHS Foundation Trust in just four weeks’ time.

Mr Chakrabahadur Rai, Chairperson of the SGNCAK, handed over the cheque to Ms Susan Acott, the Chief Executive of the Trust, in William Harvey Hospital Ashford Kent on Monday, 22nd of June 2020.

Ms Acott thanked each and every one who stood side by side to help fight the COVID-19.

The Chairperson praised all the NHS staff for their 24/7 comprehensive care while putting themselves at higher risk of developing the COVID-19.  He added that no words could express the gratitude and appreciation for the NHS staff’s outstanding services except a few words, “Thank you very much!”

He thanked the COVID-19 Fund Raising Sub-Committee and every individual of the community for showing their solidarity by donating and mentioned that without their help it would not be possible to present the cheque as a token of gratitude on that day.  He also thanked Dr Basnyat who helped the community organize the handing over programme, and Youth Community, Everest Inn, Aamabuwa Ltd and ABC Nepalese Fellowship for joining the Nepalese Community to help the fund raise.

According to the General Secretary of the Community, Mr Ram Prasad Limbu, an appeal message was posted to the Community’s Viber Group on 25th of May after the suggestions received from the members that the community should do something to help the NHS fight the COVID-19.

The community could not do any other activity due to the COVID-19 lock down.  The COVID-19 Fund Raising Sub-Committee was surprised as the donations flooded in as soon as the appeal message was posted to the Community Viber Group.

The COVID-19 Fund Raising Sub-Committee consisted of seven people as follows:

  1. Coordinator: Dammar Singhak
  2. Secretary: Ram Prasad Limbu
  3. Treasurer: Mohan Limbu
  4. Member: Popiraj Rai (Hospital Liaison)
  5. Member: Basundhara Nayong Rai (Ladies Committee)
  6. Member: Jeeb Panday (Businesses)
  7. Member: Shikhar Limbu (Youth Committee)

The Sagarmatha Gurkha/Nepalese Community Ashford Kent (SGNCAK) was established in 2004 with the main aim of building more cohesion among the members of own and other local communities by integrating into the local society.
